The 2019 Mélange Rouge is a wine with a wide-ranging bouquet of aromas. Blackberry compote, blueberry and cassis are intertwined with savory characteristics of olive tapenade, clove and white pepper. The rich and unctuous palate delivers notes of raspberry, dark chocolate and peppered salami. The fine chalky tannins are perfectly balanced with ample thirst-quenching acidity.

Winemaker Notes

My goal with the Mélange Rouge is to make the best wine possible with the wide array of grape varieties and vineyard sources used to craft this blend. While the components of this wine change from vintage to vintage, the thought process remains the same. It is so fascinating to bring in grapes from very different climatic regions and see how contrasting the same varieties can be grown in different areas. For instance, by using Syrah and Grenache vineyards in cool climate regions we see the more herbaceous, savory characteristics of these varieties, the warmer climate vineyards produce the rich black fruit of Syrah and the classic bright red fruit of Grenache. By blending these same but very different components, my idea is to get the best of both worlds. I love the process of blending and crafting this wine each year, using the contrasting nuances and striking similarities of each variety to make the best wine we see possible year in and year out.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Mélange Rouge drifts out with wonderfully peppery notes, giving way to stewed plums, Morello cherries, and boysenberry scents, with hints of garrigue and bacon fat. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a firm backbone of grainy tannins and great tension supporting the perfumed black and red fruit flavors, finishing long with a skip in its step. The blend is 48% Syrah (from Slide Hill and Rancho Boa Vista vineyards, to blend warmer and cooler climate Syrah), 35% Grenache (Slide Hill vineyard), 12% Graciano (Martian Ranch), and 5% Petite Sirah (Tommy Town Thoroughbreds - Happy Canyon).
